Moscow. War and Peace
History has a tendency to repeat itself. Why do Russians have that ‘siege’ thinking?  Why is the memory of Great Patriotic War still sacral for us?  Why didn’t the invincible Tamerlane take a risk to attack the Kremlin Walls? Why did the great armies of Napoleon and Hitler find their death in Russian land? Does geopolitical concept of Heartland and Rimland still affects modern policy?  This the tour for tourists interested in answers to these questions.

Hotel Pick Up

Your guide will meet you in the lobby area of your hotel, Leningradsky Railway Station if you travel from Saint-Petersburg by ‘Sapsan’ train or any other indicated address to begin the tour from there.

Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra

The monastery was founded in 1337 by one of the most venerated Russian saints, Sergius of Radonezh, who built a wooden church in honour of the Holy Trinity in a deep dark forest. Early development of the monastic community is well documented in contemporary lives of Sergius and his disciples. Nowadays, the Holy Trinity Lavra is the main acting Orthodox monastery in Russia which has always played a significant role in the history of the country.

Holy Trinity Cathedral

The Cathedral of Holy Trinity (1422) is the spiritual and historical centre of the monastery. It is the place where the holy relics of St. Sergius are kept in the shrine made in 1585 by orders of Ivan the Terrible. This is also the place firmly associated with another Russian Saint, the great artist Andrey Rublev. The fact that this outstanding master was responsible for the murals of the interior and that the world-famous icon ‘The Trinity’ was painted for this iconostasis determined an exclusive role of the cathedral in national culture.

Assumption Cathedral

The largest structure of the complex is the Cathedral of the Assumption dedicated to the Mother of God especially revered in Russia. The building repeats in its proportions the Assumption Cathedral of Moscow Kremlin. The murals in the interior, recalling the Yaroslavl wall painting in their style, and the tall many-tiered iconostasis date from the 17th century. By the north-western wall of the cathedral there is the burial vault of the Godunov family.

Holy Water Fountain

The Chapel-over-the Well was built at the end of the 17th century over the spring, which shot up during the repair of the porch of the Assumption Cathedral in 1644. Many pilgrims were cured by this water. The first was a blind monk, whose eyesight returned due to this miracle-working water. Till this day thousands of pilgrims use this water for cure and consolation in their troubles. The colourful tent-like canopy over the cross-shaped fountain, which receives water from the spring, was built in 1872.

Museum of Cosmonautics

The Museum of Cosmonautics is also known as the Memorial Museum of Space Exploration. It is located within the base of the Monument to the Conquerors of Space in the north-east of Moscow.   The inscription on the monument says: “And thus rewarded are our toils, that having vanquished lawlessness and dark, we have forged great flaming wings for our nation and this age of ours!” The  museum contains a wide variety of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits and models which explore the history of flight.

VDNH (The Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy)
