Moscow. War and Peace
History has a tendency to repeat itself. Why do Russians have that ‘siege’ thinking?  Why is the memory of Great Patriotic War still sacral for us?  Why didn’t the invincible Tamerlane take a risk to attack the Kremlin Walls? Why did the great armies of Napoleon and Hitler find their death in Russian land? Does geopolitical concept of Heartland and Rimland still affects modern policy?  This the tour for tourists interested in answers to these questions.

SOVIET MOSCOW

Soviet Moscow

This tour acquaints tourists with our communist past. We still remember the days when education and medicine was free and apartments were given to people for free according to the Soviet Constitution that guaranteed the roof over heads to every family. It was a place where nobody knew the burden of bank loans and never heard about mortgages. It was the country that destroyed fascism, launched the first man to space and invented the mightiest weapon in the world.  Oh, yes. We didn’t have two hundred sorts of sausages and most of us could not travel abroad.

Hotel Pick Up

Your guide will meet you in the lobby area of your hotel, Leningradsky Railway Station if you travel from Saint-Petersburg by ‘Sapsan’ train or any other indicated address to begin the tour from there. In case you combine this tour with Half-Day City Tour your guide will take you to lunch somewhere close to Pushkin Square so that to continue the tour in the Museum of Contemporary History of Russia.

Pushkin Square

Pushkin Square has long been a center of Muscovite life. It is one of the city’s top meeting points and a hub of urban activity. The square has plenty for visitors to see and do. At the center of the square is a famous statue of Pushkin, funded by public subscription and unveiled by Ivan Turgenev and Fyodor Dostoyevsky in 1880. In 1990, Pushkin Square became home to the first McDonald’s fast-food outlet in Russia, serving 30,000 people on its opening day.

Museum of Contemporary History of Russia

The State Central Museum of Contemporary Russian History has an extensive collection documenting the country's political development over the last 150 years.  The museum even has the actual stones thrown at policemen by rebellious workers in the 1905 Revolution. The most important events are reflected in constantly replenished funds and exposition. Here you can see first Decrees of the Soviet Power, pages from Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, various presents given to Stalin by Soviet people, Khrushchev’s full dress and even personal belongings of Yury Gagarin, the world’s first cosmonaut.

VDNH (The Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy)

The Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy is one of the largest exhibition and recreation complexes in the world with a total area of more than 520 ha visited by 24 million guests per year. On the territory of VDNH you can see many architectural masterpieces, large and small parks, and unique fountains. Forty-five sites at VDNH are recognized as cultural property sites of federal significance.  It also boasts of the country’s main skating rink. The area of the artificial ice surface exceeds 20,000 square metres and can host up to 4,500 people!
Visits
The Museum of Contemporary History of Russia, VDNH Park and exhibition centre.
Photo Stops
Pushkin Square, The Museum of Contemporary History of Russia, VDNH Park and exhibition centre.
FYI
The State Museum of the Contemporary History of Russia is closed for visitors on Mondays.
Note
The programme ends up in VDNH park in the close vicinity to VDNH metro station so that you could get back home easily by metro. However, I recommend staying in VDNH Park after the tour. The park is bigger in size than Monaco Principality and just a bit smaller than Singapore so you will definitely find what to do there!
Important
In winter VDNH Park opens the biggest ice-rink in Russia. This season renting skates and other equipment will no longer require a deposit, which will greatly simplify the process. Do you want to spend a holiday in Russia as Russians do? Bring warm clothes, rent skates, enjoy!
