History has a tendency to repeat itself. Why do Russians have that ‘siege’ thinking?  Why is the memory of Great Patriotic War still sacral for us?  Why didn’t the invincible Tamerlane take a risk to attack the Kremlin Walls? Why did the great armies of Napoleon and Hitler find their death in Russian land? Does geopolitical concept of Heartland and Rimland still affects modern policy?  This the tour for tourists interested in answers to these questions.

Vladimir - Suzdal Tour

VLADIMIR - SUZDAL TOUR

Moscow is not Russia’ we often say. This tour gives you an opportunity to confirm or to disprove this thesis. During you trip you will test our suburban trains and will see infinite fields and meadows - unforgettable landscapes glorified by Russian poets and painters. You will see the city of Vladimir that used to be a political and spiritual centre of Russian land before Moscow came to power and immerse yourself in medieval atmosphere of Suzdal.

Hotel Pick Up

Your guide will meet you in the lobby area of your hotel, Leningradsky Railway Station if you travel from Saint-Petersburg by ‘Sapsan’ train or any other indicated address to begin the tour from there.  We will use the metro (tickets are included) to take you to the train station.

Kursky Rail Terminal

We use transportation by train for this tour because it saves a lot of time and give tourists the opportunity to see Suzdal and Vladimir in one day. Otherwise, we need two days with an overnight in a hotel which is not a good option for tourists on a tight schedule. Instead, we offer you a comfortable combination of a high-speed train (takes less than 2 hours) to Vladimir and a local driver on location who will take us back to the railway station in Vladimir at the end of the tour.

Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life

This wooden village spread out on the high bank of the Kamenka River accumulates everything preserved from the 18th and 19th centuries until our times that has not been destroyed by fires or dismantled for firewood. In old times, the location was occupied by St. Dmitry's Monastery founded in the 11th century by a monk of the Kievo-Pecherskaya Lavra. The streets of the village are made up of wooden houses, churches and windmills constructed without a single nail!

Saviour Monastery of St. Euthymius

The monastery was founded in the 14th century and also served as a fortress reinforcing the town’s northern entrance. The monastery grew in importance after donations by Ivan the Terrible and the Pozharsky family. The tomb of Russian hero Prince Dmitry Pozharsky is now by the cathedral wall.  The architectural ensemble of the monastery is included in the UNESCO world heritage list.

Suzdal Kremlin

Suzdal Kremlin is the oldest part of Suzdal known from the times of Vladimir Monomakh’s reign.  The heart of the Kremlin is the Nativity of the Virgin Cathedral (1222-1225), which stands right in the middle of the ensemble. The interior is famous for its golden gates (1230-1233) with scenes of the life of Christ. The cathedral is considered to be the oldest preserved structure in Suzdal.

Russian ‘Obed’ Lunch

Taste delicious Russian dishes in a Suzdal’s restaurant where we stay for lunch. ‘Bliny’ (pancakes), ‘pelmeni’ (meat or fish dumplings), ‘borsch’ (soup of a red color cooked with beetroot), ‘pirog’ (a big pie stuffed with fruits, mushrooms, meat or fish), ‘mors’ and ‘kvas’ (traditional beverages)   - this is an incomplete list of authentic Russian meals and drinks you can try to enrich your gastronomic experience.

Assumption Cathedral

The Assumption Cathedral was founded by Vladimir prince Andrey Bogolubsky (Andrew the Pious) in 1158 on a high hill next to Klyazma river. This gorgeous richly decorated structure was meant to embody the power and importance of Vladimir-Suzdal principality.  The cathedral was the source of inspiration for the Italian architect Aristotel Fioravanty, the author of the Assumption Cathedral in Moscow Kremlin.

Golden Gates

The Golden Gates were built in 1164, when Vladimir-Suzdal principality was ruled by Andrey Bogolyubsky (Andrew the Pious). The purpose of the Golden Gates was to decorate and to protect the city emulating the gates of other holy cities of Eastern Orthodoxy such as Jerusalem and Constantinople. The gate survived the Mongol destruction of Vladimir in 1237. A museum inside tells us about the days of the Mongol invasion of Russia in the 13th century.

Museum of Crystal, Lacquer Miniature Painting & Embroidery

Museum of Crystal, Lacquer Miniatures and Embroidery is located right opposite the Golden Gate. It houses a rich collection of Russian handicrafts and folk art, lacquer miniature, rock crystal and glass pieces. Traditional Vladimir-style embroidery is also on display. Some of the crystal and glass exhibits were created more than 250 years ago. The museum also has examples of contemporary work.
